Watch Design Poll: Symmetry vs. Asymmetry – Which Design Do You Prefer?

Hi everyone😊! A brief blog post today, and I am looking for your help and participation to answer a question that has been posed regarding this watch design. I value your opinions, and I sincerely appreciate you, my good friends and readers, along with all the comments and input you provide on this blog. So I am seeking your help and an answer here; would you kindly take part in this survey and help design this watch?

I am designing a new watch to be launched in the near future, and a question has been posed: should the watch date window be at the non-traditional 6 o’clock position? Or should it be at the traditional 3 o’clock position? So this is a question of symmetry or asymmetry? Which do you prefer? If you kindly choose which you prefer and either submit your answer in the poll below, or answer in the comments section if you prefer. Your opinion will be of great value, appreciated, and ultimately help influence this watch design:

These images you see above are not real watch parts, nor are they yet complete or finished; they are, of course, 3D mesh-model images at this stage, designed, created, and rendered by myself using Blender 4.2, a powerful 3D design software that allows for incredible flexibility and creativity. The benefits of this approach are manifold, as I have the ability to alter and build the design in real-time, enabling me to experiment with various styles, materials, and color palettes to create any design or look I desire. This method offers an unparalleled creative freedom, allowing me to explore a myriad of possibilities of watch design in ways that are truly exciting.

I guess this comes down to whether you prefer symmetry or asymmetry in design, which is an interesting question to ponder. These two concepts evoke different feelings and responses in viewers, leading us to reflect on the reasons behind our preferences. For instance, symmetry often provides a sense of balance and harmony, evoking feelings of peace and order, while asymmetry introduces dynamic tension and an element of surprise, challenging traditional aesthetics. This dichotomy raises deeper questions about our individual experiences and emotional reactions, making it even more intriguing as we consider why we may prefer one over the other in various contexts, such as architecture, graphic design, or even nature itself.

  1. Asymmetrical design works for me. The crown on a watch is on the right, so it’s already asymmetrical. To have the date window there on the right makes sense.
    .
    HOWEVER… non-traditional design is a good thing. Shows your creativity.

        1. That is a good point. Personally I quite like asymmetry anyway, but of course it has to be balanced. It is, of course, subjective, and the 3 o’clock was my first choice, but then my colleague suggested 6 o’clock, hence the poll and will be interesting to see the choice opinion distribution.

  5. Honestly, I was never a fan of the date on a watch because I am, in fact, a fan of symmetry (horizontal and vertical).

    I also don’t like seeing the continuity of numbers around the dial disrupted.

    If a date is added, then I prefer the 3-o’clock position (how I voted), mostly because that’s where I’m used to seeing it. But, if I like the watch enough, I’d put up with the date no matter where they placed it.

    Ideally, if the date has to be added, I would rather have it anywhere along the circumference halfway between the center spindle and the numerals (I much prefer number to symbols). In that case, the 12, 3, or 6 positions would be fine (but not the 9, unless I were left-handed, and the watch was made for a left-handed person).

    Probably more than you needed (or wanted) to know, but there you have it.

I have worked in this industry for 18 years and something I have learned is tastes are diverse, personal, but also congruent to current trends.     1. Thank you Suze for that valuable input and taking part in my poll. I sincerely appreciate it! I totally understand, and believe it or not, this opinion is relatively common. Some people just don’t want it on their watch, and see it as clutter to the design. I am indifferent I think…it depends on the design for me, but I certainly don’t like too much clutter on the watch face, as is often the case these days.

    So, I like both symmetry and asymmetry.

    I use both in design. I like the Avant-garde a lot, so again symmetry and asymmetry both work, depending where I want to go, or often where a design takes me as it progresses.

    This tbd watch is lovely. I did vote in your poll.

      A true creative mind – flexible and looking to go beyond the norm…I like it! Avant-garde is a great word, and a great way. I have a few designs that are probably too avant-garde for the general market, which tends to keep me most occupied, but I certainly intend to bring them out as soon as I have the time👍.

  20. As you point out Jay, a 3 o’clock date window is traditional. I enjoy the watches I have with date windows in other positions, and really like a 6 o’clock window just because it’s different to most, if for no other reason. 4 o’clock crown and date windows work for me too, but not both at the same time. All pretty subjective.

    Oddly, I have never seen the date position as one of symmetry or asymmetry, so I will now have to consider that factor!

    1. Thank you Andy for that great input👍. I always find it interesting to hear what others have to say, especially watch fans, as they probably tend to notice things more and have a wide eclectic taste.

      To be honest this was sparked by a colleague of mine working with me on this watch project, who had mentioned the asymmetry versus the symmetry. I intended it at 3 o’clock and they suggested they like the more symmetrical…so hence trying it at 6! I thought to put it out there for some input and vote. Why not!
