The daily prompt asked me:
Well, I have several jobs really if I am totally honest…and my most important job is I am a Father! A single father of a great Son who is 17, soon to be 18. He will soon be off to university, in a year or so, to study math and theoretical physics. You might have seen our post on here about black holes, to which ‘Freeman’, my Son contributed. He is a bit of s smart cookie!
Apart from that I guess we are talking Job in terms of money? Well one of the things I do to try and make a living is I am a starving artist, a 3D artist more correctly. Though I say starving, we are not technically starving, but not rich in terms of money either. But money of course is far from ‘everything’…we are happy and I enjoy it😊. Here is something I have been working on today and yesterday:

My answer to the prompt question:
So my answer to the above question would have to be – yes I enjoy what I do mostly. Of course some times the jobs I have to do are more enjoyable than others, like most of us I guess, which is why I say mostly.
To keep this post on point of my ‘blog’, which is 3D art and my design work mostly (as above), I want to take the opportunity to show what I have been doing for the past two days. I was asked by one of the companies I work for to make some visual changes to a watch design I made late last year. Essentially the design wasn’t to change much, but it wanted a face-lift in dial colour and strap material – plus a whole new set of render images. This meant changes to the model materials, new pose set-ups, new lighting set-ups, more post editing etc:

What this job involved for me:
In among other things I have been doing, this has been a couple of days work for me. I created and modelled all the images you see in 3D using Blender creation suite. Being a slight perfectionist I like to get things right, and one of the things that took me a while to get right was the watch strap leather material. The straps on these watches are hand made in Devon UK by a traditional saddlers: Tanner Bates in Devon UK. So I wanted this leather strap to really look like hand made leather, as the actual watch will have this style watch strap – Its called Conker leather. Here is one of my renders, do you like the Leather material and strap I modelled?

The material for the leather is what we call a procedural material, in other words it is essentially ‘programmed’ using material nodes, and this can be a lengthy process to get right. The other way of doing this is to use a ‘Physical based rendering’, or ‘PBR’ material for this. A PBR material essentially uses .png images, bump maps, base colours, and a virtual material pipeline that can simulate any kind of physical material to particularly improve a 3D model. For the above I went the procedural route, so took me some time.

Lighting the Model for Arty renders:
Another part of achieving these renders that took me some time, and often does if you want good results is ‘lighting’! Good lighting is essential to obtain good imagery, as any photographer out there knows. And good lighting can take some time, lots of it is experience, but maybe more of it involves playing about with different lights and settings until you achieve the results you are looking for. I wanted some close-up emotive ‘arty’ images in this set of renders, and with good lighting I think I achieved it. here is one of them below, let me know what you think:

The conclusion to this post:
So in conclusion, with reference to two of the jobs mentioned above of Father and Artist…yes I enjoy what I do😊. It is not without challenge, but overall I do really enjoy it.
That is it for this post. though it is brief, I hope it answers the question and helps shed some light on what I do as a 3D artist. Now I am off to my other job of making some evening dinner for both of us😊.
have a great evening and day everyone!
Kind regards, Jay

Thank you Deb😊. I appreciate your kind comment, and that you have taken that much notice🙏. I attempt to weave in some of these daily prompts while keeping my blog on-point, relative to my designing & art, which is very time consuming, so doesn’t happen often. Kind regards…Jay 😊

That is a hard one to answer my friend. The best advice I could give is to choose an area or subject close to your heart (something that means a lot to you) and write very honestly about it 👍 – that would be a good starting point. Also there might be some good advice on Google, such as articles and advice on blogging, that could be worth a try. Good luck my friend on your endeavor 👍. Best…Jay 😊

I know what it takes to have a perfect 3D model. Sometimes when you are working on a very small detail, and it takes up lot of time, it may not even be appreciated in true sense. My son has graduated in Animation recently and loves to work in blender

Hi Namrata 😊. Yes it can be time consuming, but also very rewarding if you enjoy it like all hobbies/passions/loves. And yes you are right, sometimes you can get lost in the detail and have to remind yourself that maybe no one else, other than yourself, will look at it that closely 🤔🙂, so you have to know when to move on to the next step. Has he!…well done your Son! I bet you are both pleased and proud…more power to him👍. Kind regards…Jay 😊

Thank you for that wonderful comment😊👍. Yes, it is you are right. Just like in photography lighting is such an important part, and often hard to get right, but really makes the object/image come alive when you do! Kind regards…Jay😊
