The Rose Window – Heaven and hell

I wouldn’t say I am religious person, spiritual yes – what ever that is defined as in your mind. I am fascinated by reality and how it is, the science of trying to understand it, and what reality actually is. But I do think there is an intelligence beyond us, or rather we are just a part of that intelligence, whatever it is. So I do ‘sit-on-the-fence’ with most of these big questions, and am intrigued by them ; what is this intelligence, why are we? What am I? Why here and now? I am In constant debate with other people and myself, I am fascinated by these questions.

I thought I would start this post with this, as the idea of ‘Heaven & Hell’ sits here with me, I don’t know, I sit on the fence, I ponder, and am intrigued, probably like a lot of people…but I just don’t know.

Anyway it is another fascinating artistic inspiration for me, which is how I see the world maybe. Also, I have been listening to the album ‘Heaven and hell’ by ‘Vangelis’ a lot lately. I have an eclectic taste in music. I do like Vangelis and this is just an awesome album, rather just a fantastic journey and piece of music, a concept album I would suggest.

Anyway, it maybe went towards inspiring me to make this model and image of what I am calling ‘Heaven and Hell’. All modelled and rendered using Blender 4.0, I did draw this window manually rather than using geometry nodes, so took my quite a long time…I hope you like the image:

Heaven and Hell – A Rose Window:

Here is an image that I made on the way to this image. It has a Voronoi-noise plugged into the window material to produce the random colouring, it looks nice I think, but this was just a step toward what I was looking for in the image above…but still a nice image so will share it too:

And a couple of the model images, without materials and finish added, just to give you a better idea of the base modelling involved. I drew all of this manually rather than using geometry nodes. so took some time and patience, but very rewarding! This is an interpretation of a famous Rose window…can you tell which?

I hope you enjoy the images, that is all for this post 😊.

Have a great day everyone!

Kind regards, Jay

    1. Thank you TwilightTangledScarlet 😊. I sincerely appreciate your kind words 🙏. I am glad you like it…it makes all the time I spend on them worthwhile when people appreciate them so much. Thank you…Jay

    1. The message is – life is ‘contrast’- by its very nature, when you contemplate it; without that contrast we have nothing. The Heaven and Hell you could say underpins our existence. These are just two representations of that. The random hues, by the way, are created using Voronoi math nodes, to create that interesting randomness. Yes, they are otherwordly 🙂. thank you for your input usfman…it is certainly appreciated 🙏. Best, Jay

  1. Hey, Jay! I love your design for the Rose Wheel. I’m wondering… Where should I start learning about the rose wheel? I know search engines and AI like ChatGPT are options, but I want to learn how they relate to Heaven and Hell. Any suggested keywords or prompts (for AI in the latter)?

Thank you for sharing this lovely image and your thoughts behind it. 🙂 I’d love to hear any other views you have about the Rose Wheel and/or Heaven & Hell.

    1. Hi Joseph. I am pleased you like the design. Rose-window designs are very interesting and intriguing, and that is quite a deep question when someone asks. I don’t profess to know an awful lot about them, but I do have a great interest in the geometric design and learning ‘the why’ myself. My Son is a mathematician, so between us we constructed the geometry nodes, using some math, in Blender to construct circular Rose designs. There is a deep connection between math, creation, nature, us etc…as I am sure you know. This is a deep, and could be a long philosophical conversation, which I am happy to have. 3D design software suites like ‘Blender’ are great for this, it is a learning curve but I am happy to point you in the right direction, even send you the geometry node file set-up if you want to learn. On the philosophical side, I just think there is a deep connection/underpinning, between math, geometry, creation and life. Here is a great page on the internet which might be a good starting point:

On the Heaven and Hell point…I think ‘Life’ is contrast, without ‘contrast’ we have nothing, in this experience anyway, and beauty comes in all forms. Whether we choose to see it is good or bad, light or dark…it ultimately ‘is’, and this is one of our eternal struggles maybe? Maybe Heaven and Hell lies in everything, even us? A long conversation😊

      Best, Jay ✌️

      1. That’s very insightful. Thanks! 🙂 I will have to check the link out later; I’m just waking up from my slumber. lol I’m not very talkative after just waking up. I will however bookmark it though. 😉
